African Games 2023: Ghana records highest medal haul in history
Ghana made history at the 13th African Games, held in Accra, by securing its highest medal haul ever.
Hosting the Games for the first time, the nation amassed an impressive total of 68 medals: 19 gold, 29 silver, and 20 bronze.
This achievement shattered its previous record of 27 medals set in 1973, marking a monumental success in the event’s history since its inception in 1965.
The medal tally began with Winnifred Ntumi’s victory in weightlifting, setting the stage for what would become a historic achievement.
In a thrilling development for Ghanaian sports, both the male and female football teams clinched gold, a feat complemented by the female hockey team’s top podium finish.
The arm-wrestling team, with an unexpected but remarkable performance, contributed eight gold medals to the tally.
Boxing, another highlight, saw four of its athletes stepping onto the highest podium, including notable performances by Samuel Takyi and Joseph Commey, who continued their streak of success from previous international competitions.

Athletics, always a crowd-puller, did not disappoint. The athletes dazzled the home crowd, securing three gold medals in a demonstration of speed, strength, and endurance.
This contributed significantly to Ghana finishing sixth out of the 53 nations that participated, a substantial leap from the 15th position at the 2019 Rabat Games.
The Accra 2023 Games, which hosted a record 29 multi-sport disciplines, saw over 5,000 elite athletes and coaches from 54 African countries compete over three weeks.
Notably, this edition served as an official qualifier for the XXXIII Olympic Games Paris 2024, adding an extra layer of competitiveness to the events.
With disciplines such as athletics, swimming, cycling, badminton, wrestling, tennis, table tennis, and triathlon offering Olympic qualifying opportunities, the Games were not just about continental glory but also about securing a spot on the world’s biggest sporting stage.
This historic achievement not only highlights Ghana’s growing prowess in various sports but also underscores the nation’s capacity to host events of significant international caliber, setting a new benchmark for future editions of the African Games.
