World Cup 2022: Was Argentina’s win over France the best ever final?
It was complete. Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe are two of the best players in the world. Goals for a dramatic comeback. And a nail-biting penalty shootout that decided the winner.
People on social media went crazy, sports stars all over the world were mesmerized, and people in Lusail Stadium got to see a mouth-watering show.
Ferdinand said on BBC One, “I couldn’t imagine that happening, where two great teams go head-to-head and no one backs down.”
“It was great to see the two best players on each team go at it, goal for goal.
Alan Shearer, who used to play for England, added: “We can’t catch our breath because the final was so amazing. I’ve never seen anything like it before, and I don’t think I ever will. It was hard to believe.”
Lionel Scaloni, who is in charge of Argentina, said he was “calm” after the game, but he couldn’t hide how happy he was.
“The game was out of control. I know we played a good game; we could have won in the first 90 minutes “he said.
“I feel better than I ever have. How we did it is the most important thing.”
“It’s hard to argue against the fact that Messi is the best football player.”
Before the game started, Messi of Argentina and Mbappe of France got a lot of attention because they were tied for the Golden Boot and were seen as the superstars who would lead their teams to victory.
But Mbappe didn’t get much of a change in the first half. It took Alexis Mac Allister only four minutes to get Argentina’s first shot on goal, and they went on to beat the defending champions.
Messi’s first contribution was a penalty kick goal in the 23rd minute that put Argentina ahead. Angel di Maria scored 13 minutes later to make it 2-0.
France was in a mess, and Mbappe hadn’t been in the other team’s box and had the least amount of touches of any player after 30 minutes.
After 41 minutes, manager Didier Deschamps had had enough. He took Olivier Giroud and Ousmane Dembele off the field and put Randal Kolo Muani and Marcus Thuram in their place.
At halftime, France had not taken a shot on goal, and Argentina was winning easily with a score of 2-0. Reporters from all over the world were putting the finishing touches on their match reports, since the game was surely over.
But the action hadn’t even started.
When France finally tested the Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for the first time after 67 minutes, they were still not at their best. However, the game changed in a tense 97-second period that came next…
Muani went down in the box after Nicolas Otamendi tackled him, and Mbappe took the penalty kick and shot it past Martinez.
Argentina had just caught their breath, and French fans were still cheering, when Mbappe scored a stunning second goal with a volley to tie the game at 2-2. Here we go with extra time.
But this was Messi’s night, and he thought he had the last word when he poked the ball over the line in the 108th minute, setting off wild celebrations.
But Mbappe was not done. In the 118th minute, he scored his third goal, making him the second person after England’s Sir Geoff Hurst in 1966 to score three goals in a World Cup final. After that, there was a penalty shootout.
Argentina got their hands on the trophy for the first time since 1986 after Kingsley Coman’s penalty kick was saved by Martinez and Aurelien Tchouameni’s shot went wide. This was the first time Argentina had won the game since 1986.
