The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has announced the passing of its esteemed patron, Joe Lartey Snr, a veteran commentator who brought Ghana’s sports to life with his iconic voice. He died on Friday, April 26, 2024, at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished for generations to come.

Born on June 6, 1927, in Accra, Joe Lartey Snr grew up in a strict Methodist family that played a significant role in the establishment of the Mount Zion Church. His father, nicknamed “Mr Kill-Joy’s father,” was a disciplinarian who limited Joe’s extracurricular activities, but his love for writing and storytelling was encouraged by his eldest brother, who gave him tuition and allowed him to read.

Joe’s journey to fame began in journalism, influenced by Nnamdi Azikiwe, a former Nigerian leader. He started as a writer and later joined the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) as a member of The Talks and Features Department. His impeccable English skills led to him writing and editing stories, and eventually, he was invited to cover a sports event, which marked the beginning of his illustrious career in sports commentary.
