UPSA honors Professor Joshua Alabi

A Honorary Doctorate Degree has been given to Professor Joshua Alabi by University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) in recognition of nearly 50 years of committed work, leadership and positive change in the institution.
The honour was given to him during a ceremony at the university’s main campus on Thursday, December 4, 2025. This ceremony was attended by the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Council members, faculty, staff, students and alumni.
Prof Joshua Alabi, who has risen through every academic and administrative rank at the institution, said the award meant a lot to him, especially because UPSA has had a big influence on his life. Professor Joshua Alabi said that “This recognition is not merely an award; it symbolises a collective story of faith, resilience and transformation.”
Professor Joshua Alabi remembered going to the then Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) in 1976 as a Professional Accounting student. He returned in 1987 as a lecturer. Professor Joshua Alabi noted that this was a career built on “ exploiting people, ideas and progress:”
Head of Management Consultancy, Dean of Management, Assistant Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Head of Marketing, Pro-Rector, Rector and ultimately the first Vice-Chancellor of UPSA were the roles he moved through.
A citation which was presented to Professor Joshua Alabi shows that his role leading the change of IPS into a fully fledged public university. He also helped in improving academic standards and he was also strengthened institutional governance and shaped the development of students.
His earlier leadership on the international stage as President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) in Russia in 1984 was also acknowledged.
