University of Ghana Issues COVID-19 Alert After New Cases Reported on Campus
The Health Services Directorate of the University of Ghana has warned of a rise in COVID-19 cases in and around the university community. A notice released on June 23, 2025, confirmed a number of suspected and confirmed cases, urging everyone on campus to take precautions seriously.
According to the statement, “in light of the development, all staff, students, and visitors are strongly advised to remain vigilant” and follow safety guidelines to reduce the risk of infection and further spread. The recommended preventive measures include:
● Wearing face masks properly, especially in crowded or enclosed places
● Washing hands frequently with soap and running water or using alcohol-based hand sanitizers
● Keeping a safe distance of at least one metre from others
● Avoiding large gatherings unless absolutely necessary
● Ensuring proper ventilation in lecture halls, offices, and meeting rooms.
● Staying home and seeking prompt medical attention if experiencing flu-like symptoms
In response to the situation, the COVID-19 Response Protocols on campus have been reactivated. These include screening and triage procedures at the university’s health facilities. The Health Directorate says it is closely monitoring the situation and will provide regular updates as needed.
The statement encouraged members of the community to cooperate and report any symptoms. It also provided a contact email for further inquiries: phughospital@ug.edu.gh. “We must work together to protect ourselves and our community,” the Directorate emphasized.
This alert comes as a reminder that COVID-19, while no longer dominating headlines, is still present and can resurge at any time. Although no specific case numbers were given, the university is taking steps to protect its more than 50,000 students and hundreds of staff.
The notice serves as a wake-up call, especially as most global restrictions have been relaxed. With academic activities in full swing, the University hopes these measures will help prevent any serious outbreak.
