UG’s inability to accommodate Free SHS graduates blamed on Akufo Addo

No University admission for Free SHS Graduates
Ghanaians have reacted to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghanais concerned about the ability of the institution to accommodate the influx of graduates from the Free SHS programme.
The news has not gone done well with Ghanaians and they have taken to social media to show their frustration over the news. Many are of the view that the news is a reflection of the lack of pro-activeness on the part of the Government to deal with the accommodation problem envisaged when the Free SHS was implemented in 2017.
Below are some sampled views on the issue
Those who see a problem with off-campus accommodation

This exposes how grossly incompetent Akuffo Addo – Bawumia are. Let them come and explain to Ghanaians why is it that they never budgeted for infrastructures in our tertiary institutions since they know that they are unthought through the programme, the free SHS will increase the number of enrollment in the tertiary institutions.

This is in the DNA of all NPP governments. Do you remember the 4yrs SHS under prez Kuffour? They always implement policies without planning ahead. Even the recent reform at the Basic school level is a clear example. They implemented the reform before organizing shadow training for teachers, I can’t tell if the textbooks for the reform are now ready.

Now we are going to see the funny side of our current government. They failed to plan ahead.

Those who see no problem with off-campus accommodation

Infrastructure before implementation is not practical in our situation now because it cannot catch up with our population growth. If we were to build accommodation before implementing FSHS how many years can we build enough and how many potential students will be left behind. Solving the problems as they present themselves is better than trying to solve a problem by denying others the chance to education.

But off-campus private accommodation is not a new thing in Ghana. Currently, all over the country, the majority of University students stay in private hostels and rented rooms in private homes. So this has nothing to do with Free SHS… Moreover, if we eliminate corruption from the fabric of our society there will be enough resources to provide the need infrastructure for the benefit of the current and future generations.

Who gave him the job as Vice-Chancellor. Every university can Only take into admission the number of students they can take care of. Students want education, not accommodation. The government is not in charge of students’ admission. The vice should look at his administration, not politics.

Does everyone have to end up at the tertiary level? The most important thing is that it will come to a time where the minimum education in the country will now be SHS instead of JHS previously.
