U-23 AFCON: Ghana Draws 1-1 with Cameroon
Ghana Under 23 team began their CA AFCON U-23 Cup of Nations campaign with a hard fought 1-1 draw against Cameroon in Cairo.
Bayern Munich teenage sensation Frank Evina opened the scoring with a beautiful freekick on the hour mark after Habib Mohammed had commited a foul right at the edge of the box.
The Asante Kotoko defender redeemed himself by fetching the equalizer with three minutes left.
Following a lackluster display from both sides in the first half, the Cameroonians opened the scoring on the hour mark through Bayern Munich forward Frank Evina.
The 19-year old brilliantly curled in a beautiful freekick just at the edge of the box leaving goalkeeper Kwame Baah helpless to score his first goal at the U-23 AFCON 2019 in Egypt.
Coach Ibrahim Tanko replaced captain Yaw Yeboah, who looked to have pick an injury with Evans Osei Owusu.
In the opening game for the Black Meteos at the U-23 AFCON, Kwabena Owusu, who took the armband from Yeboah had himself booked after bumping into a Cameroonian defender on the floor.
Minutes later Habib Mohammed pulled level after a pass from the middle deflected to his path in the box and like a fox he poked the ball into the net with four minutes left.
The Cameroonians were pushing for another goal but a last minute effort blasted wide saw the two sides share the spoils.
Ghana must up its game when it classes with Egypt and Mali in their next two games and make it to the next round.
All the teams at the U-23 AFCON in Egypt are eyeing a slot at the next Olympic Games. Ghana has not qualified for the Olympic Games since 2004 when the Games were held in Athens. It is time for Coach Tanko to break the bad luck and pull this team through.
