The FORUM: Nine labour unions to strike by April 30 if…

Nine major labour unions, collectively known as ‘The FORUM,’ have issued a stern warning, indicating their readiness to initiate a nationwide strike by April 30, 2024, unless their longstanding grievances concerning pension arrears are addressed.
This looming action underscores a deep-rooted issue that has been festering for over a decade, highlighting systemic challenges within Ghana’s pension system and the government’s handling of public sector grievances.
The crux of their discontent lies in the government’s persistent failure to transfer the pension arrears owed to their members into the accounts managed by their respective fund managers.
This inaction has left many workers in a precarious financial position, directly impacting their retirement security and future well-being.
The delay signals a broader systemic issue, undermining the integrity of the pension system and eroding trust between the government and its public sector employees.
For the affected workers, this issue is not just a financial inconvenience but a matter of financial survival, casting a shadow over their hard-earned retirement plans.
This delay not only affects the financial security of the members but also undermines trust in the government’s commitment to uphold its obligations under the pension scheme.
Isaac Bampoe Addo, Chairman of The FORUM, expressed frustration over the lack of engagement from the government, particularly the Minister of Pensions, who has yet to acknowledge their correspondence on the matter
. “The Forum met and raised issues that we wanted to be addressed by Minister of Pensions. We wanted among others, transfer of past credit by SSNIT to the public sector pension scheme…The Minister has not acknowledged our letter so we shall proceed with our strike,” he declared.
The FORUM’s membership spans across a wide array of public sector associations, including the Civil and Local Government Staff Association (CLOGSAG), Ghana National.
