Set up Voter Transfer Centres at University Campuses; NUGS Tells E.C
NUGS Calls for Voter Transfer Centers on University Campuses
As the 2024 general elections draw near, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has made an appeal to the Electoral Commission (EC) to establish voter transfer centers on university campuses across the country.
The union’s request is aimed at ensuring that all students have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote.
According to Article 43 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, a person is eligible to vote if they are a citizen of Ghana and are 18 years or older. However, many students face difficulties in transferring their votes from their hometowns to their university campuses, where they are temporarily residing.
NUGS has cited Article 45 of the constitution, which states that “A voter shall vote at the polling station where they are registered,” and Article 46, which empowers the EC to make regulations for the transfer of votes.
The union believes that setting up voter transfer centers on university campuses will enable students to exercise their right to vote without being disenfranchised.
“We kindly request that the Electoral Commission takes the necessary steps to enable the limited transfer of votes for our members, in accordance with the following constitutional requirements,” said a statement issued by NUGS. “We believe that this will ensure that our members are not disenfranchised and can fully participate in the democratic process come December.”
This move is seen as a significant step towards ensuring that all students have access to the electoral process. In recent years, many students have faced difficulties in exercising their right to vote due to the challenges associated with transferring their votes from their hometowns to their university campuses.
“We are appealing to the Electoral Commission to take immediate action to address this issue,” said a spokesperson for NUGS. “We want to ensure that all students have equal access to voting and can participate in shaping the country’s future.”

The establishment of voter transfer centers on university campuses will not only enable students to exercise their right to vote but also increase their participation in the electoral process. This is particularly important for Ghana’s democracy, where youth participation is crucial for shaping the country’s future.
“We believe that every citizen has a right to vote, regardless of their geographical location,” said another spokesperson for NUGS. “We want to ensure that all students have equal access to voting and can participate in shaping the country’s future.”
The Electoral Commission has been urged to take immediate action to address this issue and ensure that all students have equal access to voting.
In conclusion, NUGS’ appeal to the EC is a timely and necessary step towards ensuring that all students have access to the electoral process.
