Sales agent jailed 7 years for squandering company’s cash of GH¢75,895.00 on sports betting
Kelvin Ofori Sakyi, a 24-year-old sales agent at the Mile 8 branch of Obrempong Cold Store in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality has been imposed an sentence of seven years hard labor imprisonment for misappropriating his employer’s cash.
Kelvin Ofori Sakyi was accused of using GH¢75,895.00 for betting on football, resulting to his conviction by the Tarkwa Circuit Court where Mrs Hathia Ama Manu is the court’s presiding judge. He confessed to the offence and was sentenced as a result.
Joyce Odame, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), prosecuting told the court that, Priscilla Aidoo the complainant, is the Obrempong Cold Store’s 8 branch Manager at the Mile 7, and she stays in the same vicinity.
She noted that Sakyi had extra duties and he used to receive frozen products from the complainant each and everyday.
Joyce Odame, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), expressed that the complainant realized that anytime Sakyi makes sales account after the day’s work there is always a shortage, he insisted that customers always buy the products on credit.
As stated in the prosecutor’s brief, an audit was undertaken subsequently including customers who bought products on credit or had paid their indebtedness to him via mobile money and in cash.
The audit showed that,in the course of October and November 2024, Kelvin Ofori Sakyi was not able to provide account for the sales of frozen products worth GH¢75,895.00 which was entrusted to him.
Charges were brought against him, and he was arrested by the police. Investigations revealed he used the outstanding amount to stake Soccer bet.
The Prosecution stated that Kelvin Ofori Sakyi’s mobile money transaction history obtained from MTN indicated that,over the period October to November 2024, he spent a total amount of GH¢75,173.00 on betting and he admitted during the investigation caution statement.
