Public transport fares down 15% following fuel price drop

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced that transport fares will be reduced by 15%, starting Saturday, May 25, 2025. This move comes after an 18% drop in fuel prices and a meeting with the Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, on Monday, May 19.
Public Relations Officer Abbas Ibrahim Moro confirmed the new fare adjustment in an interview with 3news.
“We just had a meeting with the Minister of Transport and we have agreed that, effective Saturday, May 25, transport fares must be reduced by 15%,” he said.
Mr. Moro explained that the union usually bases fare changes on one-third of the fuel price drop. However, this time they chose a higher reduction to help ease the financial burden on passengers.
“We normally use one-third of the fuel price reduction to adjust fares, but we opted for 15% this time to reflect the fuel price trend. We also expect our counterparts in the spare parts industry to follow suit and reduce their prices,” he said.
He added that this reduction was made without waiting for other cost factors such as vehicle parts or maintenance to go down. “We want to place on record that we did not wait for the other components of our cost build-up to reduce before implementing the 15% reduction,” he added.
Mr. Moro also warned that any GPRTU members who refuse to apply the new fares will be dealt with. “If your Union has decided, you have no option but to comply,” he said firmly.
The GPRTU is now encouraging other players in the transport sector especially those dealing in spare parts to also lower their prices, so the cost of transportation remains affordable for the public.
This latest move is part of efforts to ease the economic pressure on Ghanaians who rely on public transport for their daily activities.
