Prof. Frimpong Oppong and Bernasko Essah nominated for Supreme Court bench
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced the nomination of two new justices to the Supreme Court bench.
Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong, a renowned legal academic and fellow of the Ghana Academy of Sciences, and Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Essah, a justice of the Court of Appeal, have been given the green light by the Judicial Council to proceed to Parliament for the constitutionally mandated vetting process.
According to President Akufo-Addo, who made the announcement during the inauguration of the governing board of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre on Tuesday, July 16, 2024,
both nominees will bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the apex court. Prof. Frimpong Oppong, when appointed, will join Prof. Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu as one of the legal academics on Ghana’s highest court.

With his extensive background in both local and international arbitration, he is poised to make a significant impact.
Prof. Frimpong Oppong’s academic career has taken him to Ghana, Europe, and the United States, where he has taught and practiced law.
He follows in the footsteps of illustrious predecessors like Justice Professor Date-Bah and Prof. Mensah-Bonsu, who have made significant contributions to the legal field.
His appointment will undoubtedly bring a fresh perspective and expertise to the Supreme Court.
Justice Bernasko Essah, on the other hand, brings a wealth of experience as a State Attorney, private legal practitioner, and as a Justice of the High Court and Court of Appeal.
Her commitment to women’s issues in the judiciary is underscored by her membership in the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ).
Her extensive background in litigation and dispute resolution will serve her well in her new role.
The nomination of these two highly qualified individuals is a testament to President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to strengthening Ghana’s judiciary and ensuring that the Supreme Court remains a respected institution.
With their expertise and experience, they will undoubtedly contribute significantly to the development of Ghana’s legal system.
