He was first elected to the parliament in 1997 and briefly served as Minister of Home Affairs in 2002.
In 2005, he became the Secretary-General of KANU but later joined the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) after opposing a proposed new constitution.
In the 2007 elections, Ruto supported ODM’s Raila Odinga. The disputed results led to widespread violence, prompting the creation of a coalition government in which Ruto was appointed Minister of Agriculture and later Higher Education.
Despite being charged by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for his alleged role in the post-election violence, Ruto continued his political career, forming the Jubilee Coalition with Uhuru Kenyatta.
The duo, known as “UhuRuto,” won the 2013 elections, with Ruto serving as Deputy President.
Their ICC trials were terminated in 2016 due to insufficient evidence, and Ruto and Kenyatta were re-elected in 2017.
However, their relationship soured during their second term, with Kenyatta endorsing Odinga in the 2022 elections.
Ruto, running as the United Democratic Alliance candidate, framed his campaign around the struggles of ordinary Kenyans, or “hustlers.”
He won the presidency with 50.49% of the vote, and after the Supreme Court upheld the results, he was inaugurated on September 13, 2022.
Ruto’s tenure has been marked by his dismissal of cabinet ministers amid protests over taxation and governance issues.
