Post-election reflections: Bawumia addresses party failures
Former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has issued a public apology to party members following the NPP’s poor showing in the last general elections.
Speaking during an address in London, United Kingdom, Dr. Bawumia admitted the party made several critical mistakes that led to significant losses, especially in key constituencies. While he acknowledged the party’s efforts, he was clear that things did not go as planned.
“The NPP did a lot of work, there’s no doubt about that, but we did not get everything right. We got quite a few things wrong, and I think that, on my own behalf and on behalf of the party, I apologise to all of you for us not getting the figures right,” he said.
Despite the outcome, Dr. Bawumia remained hopeful about the party’s prospects and urged members to look ahead with confidence.
“I believe that, by the grace of God, if we are given another opportunity, we will get many things right, because we have learnt the lessons that will guide us forward,” he added.
The NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections was substantial, affecting both the presidential and parliamentary races. In response, the party commissioned a 12-member committee led by former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye, to investigate the reasons behind the loss.
The committee has since submitted its report to the party’s leadership. However, the contents of the findings have not been made public, with officials stating that the report is meant for internal review only.
As the NPP regroups and reflects on the factors that contributed to the electoral defeat, Dr. Bawumia’s remarks signal a tone of accountability and a call to rebuild trust among party supporters.
