Opoku Prempeh not an ideal Candidate for Bawumia- Andy Appiah Kubi
A member of the National Council of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Andy Appiah-Kubi, has publicly expressed his disapproval of the running mate candidate submitted by the party’s flagbearer, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia saying he is not an ideal one. The controversy surrounds the choice of Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who was presented to President Akufo-Addo as the running mate candidate on Tuesday, June 25.
According to Appiah-Kubi, the Energy Minister is not the right choice to partner with the party’s flagbearer in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
“I wouldn’t speak to a majority because we have not been consulted as a caucus for us to state our position. But for me, Appiah-Kubi, you can solicit my view on that,” he said. “If it were up to me to choose, I wouldn’t choose him. He is not my preference. I don’t see that happening in this equation. He cannot hold my hand, so why would I say that I prefer him? He cannot hold my hand.”
When asked if he had a preference for running mate, Appiah-Kubi revealed that he would choose someone who is more acceptable to parliamentarians and can deliver votes.
“I would want somebody who would be open with the people on the ground, who would be able to deliver the votes, who would submit to the presidency, and who would be important in bringing Parliament closer to the executive,” he emphasized.

Appiah-Kubi’s comments come as a surprise given that Opoku Prempeh was presented as Bawumia’s preferred choice for running mate candidate.
“I wouldn’t speak to a majority because we have not been consulted as a caucus for us to state our position,” Appiah-Kubi said. “But for me, Appiah-Kubi, you can solicit my view on that. If it were up to me to choose, I wouldn’t choose him. He is not my preference.”
When asked whether he thought Opoku Prempeh was acceptable to the entirety of the NPP base, particularly MPs, Appiah-Kubi replied: “I wouldn’t say so. Because if there was an opportunity like that, I would express a candidate however acceptable otherwise to our presidential candidate.”
The Asante Akim North MP believes that Opoku Prempeh falls short in these areas, citing his inability to campaign effectively in various constituencies.
This development is likely to stir up controversy within the NPP and may put pressure on Bawumia to reconsider his choice of running mate. The party’s flagbearer will need to carefully weigh the opinions of its members and consider alternative options to ensure that its ticket is strong and appealing to voters in the upcoming elections.
