No Dumsor during Dr. Opoku Prempeh tenure of office- Akufo Addo
The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has vehemently denied claims that Ghana experienced erratic power supply, also known as “dumsor,” during the tenure of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as Energy Minister.
Speaking at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi during the unveiling of Dr. Prempeh as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Vice Presidential candidate, President Akufo-Addo commended NAPO for his management of the energy sector.
According to the President, Dr. Prempeh’s leadership of the Energy Ministry has been marked by stability and reliability in power supply, contradicting the experiences of many Ghanaians who endured power rationing during that period.
President Akufo-Addo attributed this success to NAPO’s effective management, stating, “He managed the power sector well when I switched him from the Education Ministry to the Energy Ministry.
We have not experienced any ‘dumsor’ under his leadership of that Ministry.”
The President also reminisced about his early encounters with Dr. Prempeh, recalling how he appointed him as director of elections for his 2012 campaign and later entrusted him with implementing the government’s Free Senior High School policy.
President Akufo-Addo praised NAPO’s diligence and hard work in delivering the Free SHS policy, which was initiated by his administration.
“In 2012 he was director of elections for my campaign. I saw the gold in him.
When I became president, I entrusted him with implementing the FREE SHS. He has worked and delivered it diligently.
Today Mahama says he rather did it,” President Akufo-Addo said.
Furthermore, President Akufo-Addo spoke highly of his running mate, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, touting their competencies and loyalty.
He acknowledged that Dr. Bawumia had been a valuable asset to his administration, providing wise counsel and advice.
“I can testify to the competence of the pair. Bawumia was in the central bank working diligently. He was surprised I appointed him running mate.
For all these years, I have not found anything wrong with him. He has walked with me cordially. He has been loyal, straightforward and an honest vice president. He never sabotaged me,” President Akufo-Addo said.

In a swipe at opposition leader John Dramani Mahama, President Akufo-Addo accused him of telling lies about commencing the Free SHS policy.
“He is just a man who lies very well,” President Akufo-Addo said.
The President’s comments have sparked debate among Ghanaians, with many taking to social media to share their own experiences with power rationing during Dr. Prempeh’s tenure as Energy Minister.
While some have supported President Akufo-Addo’s assertions, others have disputed them, calling for a more nuanced understanding of the complex issues surrounding Ghana’s energy sector.
As the 2024 general elections approach, these claims and counter-claims are likely to continue to shape the narrative around Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s candidacy and the NPP’s campaign strategy.
“It is not surprising that Mahama will say what he is saying because he has no credibility on this issue,” NAPO said in response to Mahama’s claims.
