Mahama pledges continued support for press freedom and journalist safety.

President John Dramani Mahama has has once again assured the public of the dedication of his administration to protect all journalists and also ensure press freedom throughout Ghana.

He made it clear that any act meant to threaten or pressure others, interference, or violence towards journalists will not be tolerated by his government.

During the 29th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards in Kumasi, Godwin Asediba of TV3 received recognition with the 2024 Journalist of the Year award and due to that President Mahama firmly spoke out against the attacks on journalists and civilians that took place during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.

President Mahama revealed that investigations have identified the involvement of 21 individuals in these incidents. Four of these individuals have been arrested and granted bail but five remain on remand and warrants have been given to the remaining suspects.

The President drew to attention that the Attorney-General is going through the investigative report currently and he is deciding what legal actions to take and possible compensation for both victims and bereaved families. He highlighted that, “Justice will be served. Those responsible will face the consequences of their actions.”

President Mahama disclosed that he has directed the Ministers for Government Communications and Security to set up a platform where people can share what they have  between the media and security agencies during the time he was addressing the event’s theme, “Safeguarding Ghana’s Future: The Role of the Media in Promoting Peace, Security, and the Fight Against Galamsey,”.

This kind of initiative is geared towards the prevention of future confrontations and encourage people to work together.

As he was he was xpressing concern over Ghana’s decline in the 2025 Press Freedom Index, Promises was made by President Mahama to help the country regain its reputation as a leader in media freedom across Africa.

He gave assurance on the  upcoming legislation—including the Cyber Security Amendment Bill 2025 and the Misinformation and Disinformation Bill which will focus on keeping poeple safety and the promotion of truthfulness online, without limiting the right of people to speak.
