NLC Secures Injunction to Halt CETAG Strike
The National Labour Commission (NLC) has secured an interlocutory injunction to halt the ongoing strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG).
The strike began on June 14, 2024, following government’s delay in implementing an arbitral award and negotiating service conditions for CETAG members.
The NLC responded by announcing plans to sue the government to enforce the arbitral award in CETAG’s favor.
This action taken led to a court hearing where the Commission secured an injunction, now restraining CETAG from continuing the strike.
The legally obtained injunction, on behalf of the NLC, prohibits CETAG’s executives, officers, members, agents, servants, employees, and any other individuals from further embarking on strike action.

The Commission is seeking an order to force CETAG to comply with its June 21 directive and end the strike.
The NLC’s counsel prayed the court to issue an order restraining CETAG from continuing the strike and mandating them to adhere to its directive.
The Commission is also seeking an order compelling CETAG to comply with its directive to call off the strike on grounds contained in the accompanying affidavit.
The court will convene on Thursday, July 18, for a scheduled hearing.
This development on the strike issue brings a temporary breath for students and institutions affected by the strike, which has had far-reaching implications for education in Ghana.
The impasse between CETAG and the government has been ongoing for some time, with both parties at loggerheads over the implementation of an arbitral award and service conditions.
The NLC’s decision to secure an injunction shows a significant turning point in the dispute, as it requires CETAG to put aside its demands and comply with the Commission’s directive.
The outcome of this development remains uncertain, but it is clear that all parties involved will be watching closely as the case unfolds.
Only time will tell whether this injunction will ultimately resolve the dispute or lead to further negotiations between CETAG and the government.
