NLC orders CETAG to call off strike
The National Labour Commission (NLC) has ordered the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) to call off its ongoing strike.
This directive came after a hearing on Thursday where the NLC informed CETAG of its decision to sue the government to enforce its arbitral award orders for the association.
CETAG initiated the strike on Friday, June 14, 2024, in response to the government’s delay in implementing the agreed-upon arbitral award and negotiated service conditions.
The arbitral award includes the payment of one month’s salary to each CETAG member for additional duties performed in 2022.
The NLC is taking legal action to enforce its ruling, with a court date set for June 26, 2024.
Speaking to the media, Labour Consultant Austin Garmey emphasized the NLC’s commitment to addressing CETAG’s concerns.
“We cannot deny the fact that the commission listened to the issues we raised, and we can say that they have directed the employer to go and fully implement this particular directive, if you like, an addendum to unabated states already,” Garmey explained.

He noted that CETAG would need to consult with their constituents to finalize the decision to return to work.
“That is the way to go because we will be back to the commission on the 27th,” he added.
Garmey stressed the importance of the employer beginning to fully implement the award by June 26th, coinciding with the court proceedings.
He expressed confidence that the employer would respect the NLC’s orders, urging CETAG to engage with their members to resolve the strike.
“We strongly believe that we must see them respecting the orders as well, and we will go and meet our constituents and talk to them, and then we will put this matter behind us,” he concluded.
Despite the NLC’s directive, CETAG has not yet made a final decision regarding the order to end the strike.
The association’s leadership is expected to meet with its members to discuss the NLC’s ruling and the next steps.
The strike by CETAG has significantly impacted the colleges of education, disrupting academic activities and affecting both students and staff.
The resolution of this dispute is crucial for restoring normalcy and ensuring that educational institutions can continue their operations without further interruptions.
The NLC’s decision to pursue legal action against the government underscores the seriousness of the situation and the need for swift implementation of the agreed-upon terms.
The commission’s proactive stance aims to ensure that the rights and conditions of CETAG members are respected and upheld.
As CETAG prepares to consult with its members, the outcome of these discussions will determine the immediate future of the strike.
The association’s decision will also influence the broader dialogue between the government and educational stakeholders regarding the implementation of service conditions and arbitral awards.
In conclusion, the NLC’s order for CETAG to call off its strike marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing negotiations.
The commission’s efforts to enforce the arbitral award and the government’s response will be closely watched by all parties involved.
The hope is that a resolution will be reached that addresses the concerns of CETAG members while ensuring the continuity of education in Ghana’s colleges of education.
