NDC Engages Africa Education Watch to Improve Ghana’s Education Sector
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken a step towards improving the education sector in Ghana by engaging with Africa Education Watch, a think tank organization led by Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor, the Office of Inter-Party Affairs and Civil Society Organizations. The meeting aimed to foster a collaborative relationship and inform policy formulation to enhance the quality of education in the country.
During the discussion, Kofi Asare, Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, expressed his organization’s enthusiasm for the partnership and highlighted their previous collaborations with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and other educational institutions to improve education.
He highlighted several critical issues affecting the sector, including inadequate funding, which hampers the effective implementation of educational programs and infrastructure development.

Asare stressed the need for increased investment to ensure sustainable educational reforms.
Africa Education Watch also raised concerns about the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the administration of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
They advocated for reforms to enhance the credibility and fairness of these examinations, ensuring that they accurately reflect students’ abilities and knowledge.
A pressing issue highlighted by Africa Education Watch was the high rate of school dropouts, particularly in deprived communities.
The organization pointed out that approximately 4,000 primary schools in Ghana do not have Junior High School (JHS) facilities, leading to a dropout rate of about 20 percent after primary school.
This alarming statistic underscores the need for urgent intervention to keep children in school and ensure they receive a complete basic education.
Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor, on behalf of the NDC, expressed deep appreciation for Africa Education Watch’s impactful work in the education sector. He reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to engaging with key stakeholders to drive educational reforms.
Dr. Otokunor stressed on former President John Mahama’s promise to convene all educational experts within his first 100 days in office to assess the educational sector and provide necessary recommendations for improvement.
This meeting marks the beginning of a collaborative effort to address the pressing challenges within Ghana’s education system and work towards a more equitable and effective educational framework. The NDC’s engagement with Africa Education Watch is a significant step towards achieving this goal.
With their combined expertise and commitment, it is hoped that meaningful reforms will be implemented to improve the quality of education in Ghana.
