24-Hour Ultimatum; Minority to Govt over Medical Containers at Tema Port
Parliament Issues 24-Hour Ultimatum to Government to Clear Stalled Medical Containers
The Minority in Parliament has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Akufo-Addo government to clear the remaining containers of medical commodities locked up at the Tema port.
The ultimatum comes after the Ministry of Health received only 14 out of the 182 containers holding essential medicines for antiretroviral, Tuberculosis (TB), and malaria treatments donated by the Global Fund.
The delay in clearing the containers has been ongoing for almost a year, with the government’s inability to settle third-party fees cited as the reason. The Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has expressed deep frustration and disappointment at the government’s lack of action.

“We are calling on the president, and his Vice, Ghanaians are suffering and these medications are running out of stock. The Ghana Medical Association has said that very soon we will run out of stock in most of these medications,” Akandoh said.
He added, “The right to healthcare is enshrined in our constitution, and it’s unfortunate that the government is not taking this issue seriously. We expect that within the next 24 hours, we must hear something positive with regard to the clearing of containers with the drugs at the port.”
The consequences of not meeting this deadline are dire. With the medical supplies running out of stock, patients are at risk of not receiving life-saving treatment. The Ghana Medical Association has warned that if something is not done soon, the country will face a severe shortage of essential medicines.
The Minority in Parliament has given the government a clear and unequivocal warning: clear the remaining containers within the next 24 hours or face serious consequences. The government must take immediate action to resolve this issue and ensure that these critical medical supplies are delivered to those who need them.
As it stands now, attention is on the government’s response to this ultimatum. Will they rise to the challenge and meet this deadline, or will they continue to delay and put the health and well-being of Ghanaians at risk? Only time will tell.
