Michael Owen Suggests Antoine Semenyo as Salah’s Successor at Liverpool
Liverpool and England legend Michael Owen has raised eyebrows in the world of association football by suggesting that promising Ghanaian forward who plies his trade for English Premier League club AFC Bournemouth could be a potential replacement for Mohammed Salah should the Egyptian leave Anfield as to whether or not he will extend his contract with the club or not. Per reports, Liverpool has been considering the signing of a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah, and reports include West Ham’s and Ghana’s midfielder Mohammed Kudus as a top target.
The Egyptian talisman, since joining Liverpool in 2017 from the Italian side AS Roma, has been putting on some blistering performances. With over 200 goals and countless assists registered to his name, Mohammed Salah has played a crucial role in the delivering of silverware for the club, including the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League trophy in 2020. The Egyptian talisman is well known for his pace, dribbling, and clinical finishing in the top flight of English football. Unconfirmed reports can suggest that Mohammed Salah may leave the club at the end of the season because he has not signed a contract extension with the England-based club.
Speaking after scoring a brace against Tottenham, the striker stated that “I am probably more out than in. I haven’t received any proposal. We are almost in December, and I have not received offers yet to stay at the club,” quoted by Italian renowned journalist Fabrizo on his X page. Lucrative deals coming in from clubs in Saudi Arabia and Spain can see the striker moving to any of these leagues if he does not sign a contract extension before January 2025.
However, in a recent football pundit discussion, England and Liverpool legend has disclosed that Ghanaian striker Antoine Semenyo should be the possible replacement for Salah if he is to leave Anfield. “I do not think Mohammed Salah will leave this season, but if he leaves, I would be surprised if Liverpool don’t consider Antoine Semenyo as a replacement,” quoted from Ghana Web.
Antoine Semenyo, who is just 24, is a forward who started from Bristol City before joining AFC Bournemouth in January 2023. Scoring a total of 14 goals for AFC Bournemouth. He is well known for his speed, physicality, and intelligence to take on defenders. With Semenyo’s goal-scoring record, which is not yet comparable to that of Salah’s, his abilities have caught the eye of several pundits, including Michael Owen. Semenyo’s performance for the Ghanaian national team has also been a storied one since his debut in 2022.
With Mohammed Salah’s abilities showing clearly, he cannot be compared with Semenyo. Any player stepping into that position would be faced with pressure from the fans and also pundits. Also, his goal-scoring abilities fall short of what is required to lead the Liverpool attack. Transitioning from a promising talent to a consistent performer at the highest level will demand a lot of time. The likes of Sadio Mane were not superstars but managed to flourish when they got to Liverpool.
Semenyo may not have the pedigree to fully replace Mohammed Salah at Liverpool, but he has the kind of talent that Liverpool has historically nurtured into world-class players.
