President Mahama to watch Black Stars game against Chad on Friday
President John Dramani Mahama has promised to attend the Black Stars’ 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier match against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, 21 March, 2025.
On an official visit to the Black Star’s training session, accompanied by Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams, the former captain Asamoah Gyan, and Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku, President Mahama stated his nervousness about watching live football matches, but he also gave the team encouragement of his support.
President Mahama said that “I’ll take time off and watch the game myself. Although my heart is not very good at watching soccer, I will endure it. They say I should eat before I go and sit down. And my hope is that you would justify my presence and watching you guys. The entire nation is going to support you, and I’m sure that you can make it.”
The president’s visit served as a morale booster for the team ahead of their critical World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar. He further expressed that, “the entire nation is going to support you, and I’m sure that you can, you can make it and due to that I will encourage the GFA and the executive board.
“We’re going to work hand in hand with you so that we can create the atmosphere for not limited to the Black Stars, but all the other junior teams to perform as well.” The attendance of President Mahama will be the first time a sitting president has made an appearance on a Black Stars match at the Accra Sports Stadium in recent years.
The Black Stars are at this time third in Group I with nine points and will try to pick maximum points against Chad on 21 March in Accra and Madagascar on 24 March in Morocco as well.
