Land Guards Attack Leave One Dead, Three Injured in Ga South Municipality
One person has been shot dead while three others are receiving treatment after a group of land guards attacked some individuals working on a construction site at Tebu in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
According to eyewitnesses, the land guards, who were heavily armed, demanded a digging fee of GHC4000 from the individuals working on the site. However, when they refused to pay, citing that they had already paid another group of land guards on Thursday, the situation turned violent.
“The men who came later were wielding guns and machetes and started firing at us. Four of my brothers were hit by a bullet including myself who sustained gunshot wounds to the foot.
Together with my other colleagues, we took to our heels for fear of being shot at. The land guards fired at us without hesitation,” said Felix Akunnor, one of the victims who survived the ordeal but sustained a gunshot wound to the foot.
“We were not armed so I find it difficult to understand why these land guards will behave in this manner,” Akunnor added. “We were just visiting our site as any ordinary Ghanaian would do. The estate developer who sold that land to us is our brother so it is not like we bought the land illegally.”

The Assemblyman for the Danchera electoral area, Ebenezer Ahortor, has lamented that the land guards have been terrorizing residents of the area for years, but their complaints have fallen on deaf ears.
“These land guards attacked some community members and I reported to the Divisional command.
There is a military man in this area who has vowed to fight the menace and he woke up one morning with a coffin at his doorstep. Today they have attacked some construction workers killing one in the process and injuring three others,” Ahortor told Citi News.
“I want to tell the IGP to support this police station with vehicles for patrols. They don’t even have a vehicle to patrol,” Ahortor added.
The Ga South Municipal Police Commander has promised to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to order. The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has also been called upon to provide support to the police station by providing vehicles for patrols.
This incident highlights the worrying trend of lawlessness and impunity in some parts of Ghana, where individuals are taking matters into their own hands and committing crimes without being punished. The authorities must take immediate action to address this issue and bring perpetrators to justice.
