GMA laments over delay in Afari and Sewua Hospitals; Bawumia promises of their completions soon
The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has raised concerns over the delays in completing major health facilities thus; Afari and Sewua hospitals in the Ashanti Region, which it attributes to the ongoing congestion and pressure on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
The association has criticized the government for prioritizing the construction of Agenda 111 hospitals while the referral hospital struggles, despite fundraising initiatives by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to renovate the facility.
According to Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Medical Association, resources allocated to the Agenda 111 hospital projects could have been used to retool the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
“Out of the 50 Agenda 111 hospital projects, why don’t we build 40 hospitals and dedicate the resources meant for the other 10 to retool Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to clear up the mess at the hospital [to make it efficient]?” Dr. Baidoo asked.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, acknowledged the congestion issue at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and assured that the Afari and Sewua hospitals would be completed soon.

“With the overcrowding that we are seeing at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, I agree with the suggestion to dedicate resources to retooling the hospital.
And with particular reference to the two hospitals that are almost done, Sewua which is a regional hospital, and Afari which is a military hospital, we expect Sewua to be commissioned hopefully by July [2024] and commission Afari in August [2024] as well.”
Dr. Baidoo emphasized that once completed, projects such as the 500-bed Afari Military and the 250-bed Sewua Hospitals would alleviate congestion at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, which currently serves as a referral facility for 12 regions.
“These facilities will help reduce the pressure on Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, which is currently serving patients from across 12 regions,” he said.
The GMA’s concerns highlight the need for urgent attention to be paid to the challenges faced by Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, which is currently overwhelmed with patients from across 12 regions. The hospital’s congestion and pressure on healthcare services are not only a concern for healthcare professionals but also a threat to public health.
It is essential that the government addresses the concerns raised by the GMA and takes concrete steps to alleviate the congestion and pressure on Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
The completion of major health facilities such as Afari Military Hospital and Sewua Hospital will go a long way in addressing these concerns by GMA.
