Ghana vs. CAR Exposes E-Ticketing Flaws at Baba Yara Stadium
Ghana vs. CAR and the E-Ticking Inefficiencies at Baba Yara Sports Stadium Is An Eye Opener Of the Need For Proactive Result Improving Solutions.
Despite Ghana’s thrilling 4-3 victory over the Central African Republic, the introduction of e-ticketing into Ghana’s sports event ticket sales led to numerous unsettling incidents at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
While the convenience of purchasing tickets online or through Momo is commendable, there are numerous loopholes that require blocking to enhance accountability and prevent revenue loss during such sports events.
During my visit to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, I observed that despite the introduction of e-ticketing, Ghana continues to lag behind in terms of overall system quality and the efficient implementation of flawless technology-powered systems.
Ghana vs. CAR Match Exposes E-Ticketing Flaws: How It Happaned
Prior to the start of the match, Ghanaians trooped to the stadium in Kumasi with or without tickets to watch the high-profile game.
I was shocked to realize that, even after introducing sports e-ticketing, there were no efficient automated scanning systems for the huge numbers. Queues accumulating at the stadium’s entrances created an ideal environment for system flaws, resulting in lost revenue as fans flocked into the venue without tickets.
Despite the fact that officers were stationed to scan tickets, the slow and inefficient verification process resulted in long queues, forcing even law-abiding fans to sneak into the stadiums without having their tickets verified. Sports fans entering the stadium without tickets has become so common.
Adolescents, resembling secondary school cadets rather than police officers, often perform inadequate security checks on fans before they enter the stadiums, with one military officer at the post armed with a gun.
The aforementioned flaws made it simple to print a single ticket multiple times, either for personal use or for sale.
Others were able to share soft copies of the ticket with multiple people over the phone.
Since there is no entrance ticket verification, this phenomenon has flourished. The Baba Yara Sports Stadium has a capacity of about 45 thousand spectators, but one could say without an error that there were close to 50,000 football fans in the stands.
Another piece of evidence supporting this claim was the presence of football enthusiasts standing on the walkways throughout the game. I am not sure that tickets are sold for those who intend to stand in the walkways because walkways do not have seat numbers.
The increased number of spectators standing in the walkways clearly indicated that many people without tickets had entered and occupied seats.
Sadly, even if you buy a ticket online, you cannot and will never find your ticket seat in the stadium. This is due to the lack of seat numbers on the tickets purchased online, as well as the absence of seat numbers in the stadium’s designated seating area, which would have allowed the holder to select their preferred seat.
This means that if you buy a GHS100 ticket and enter the stadium from the popular stand area, you will end up sitting just anywhere.
Another disheartening reality is that instead of generating revenue from ticket sales to address the aforementioned inefficiencies and fund stadium repairs and maintenance, the sports authority decided to distribute 10,000 free tickets to individuals in positions of power.
Another disheartening reality is that, rather than generating revenue from ticket sales to address the aforementioned inefficiencies and fund stadium repairs and maintenance, the sports authority decided to distribute 10,000 free tickets to individuals in positions of power.
Such freebies not only belittle ordinary Ghanaians and sports fans who have traveled from all over the country to support the Black Stars but also demonstrate poor thinking by giving tickets as freebies to individuals who could easily purchase them.
If all the tickets issued were worth GHS50.00 each, it indicates that our leaders failed to lead their strategic thinking and wasted GHS500,000, a sum that could have been used to renumber the seats at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium after the game.
Finally, we must educate the unprofessional police officers, who easily become agitated by overexcited fans, on how to handle such fans professionally and ensure that the police consistently demonstrate professional policing practices.
This Ghana vs. CAR Match Exposes E-Ticketing Flaws article aims to shed light on the leakages and weaknesses in the systems for those in authority to address.
To help avoid the challenges and flaws observed, we need to improve and properly integrate the Ghana e-ticketing system into Ghana’s sports events.
