Ghana Plastics Manufacturers Association (GPMA) Called-Off Planned Demo

The Ghana Plastics Manufacturers Association (GPMA) has called-off its planned demonstration scheduled for July 10, 2024. The decision comes after a meeting between the association’s leadership and the Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Michael Okyere Baafi.
According to sources close to the matter, the GPMA had planned to shut down production and demonstrate against the implementation of the 5% excise tax on plastic products. However, following the meeting with the Deputy Minister, the association has decided to put its plans on hold.
The GPMA had been vocal about its opposition to the new tax, citing concerns that it would lead to increased costs and ultimately affect the livelihoods of thousands of people employed in the industry.

The association had threatened to shut down production and demonstrate if its concerns were not addressed.
However, after engaging with the Deputy Minister, the GPMA has reportedly been assured that the government will facilitate further engagements to address its concerns. The association has thus decided to put its plans on hold, pending the outcome of these engagements.
The decision to call off the demonstration and shutdown is seen as a significant win for businesses in the country. A shutdown would have resulted in significant losses for many companies, and could have also affected the economy as a whole.
In a statement, the GPMA expressed its appreciation to the Deputy Minister for his willingness to listen to their concerns and engage with them. The association noted that it is committed to working with the government to find a solution that benefits all parties involved.

The decision to call off the demonstration and shutdown is also seen as a boost for confidence in Ghana’s business environment. It demonstrates that government is willing to listen to concerns and work with businesses to find solutions.
In conclusion, the calling off of the demonstration by the Ghana Plastics Manufacturers Association is a significant development that highlights the importance of effective communication and collaboration between stakeholders. It also underscores the need for businesses and government to work together to address challenges facing industries and ultimately promote economic growth.
