Galamsey saga; Ama Governor and Eight Other Protesters granted GHS 70,000 bail each
Justice Comfort Tasiame of the Accra High Court has granted bail to Ama Governor and eight other individuals who involved in recent protests against galamsey, setting the bail at GHS 70,000 upon provision of two sureties per defendant.
The other individuals are Emmanuel Gyan, Emmanuel Kwabena Addo, Ziblim Yakubu, Oheneba Prempeh, Philip Owusu Kwabena, Akisibik Desmond, Von Coffie, and Sadik Yakubu.
This development followed a trial that examined the legal and societal consequences of the protesters’ actions against illegal mining in Ghana.
The bail condition designed to guarantee the accused’s availability for future hearings while providing temporary reprieve from custody.
The individuals were arrested at the time of demonstrations which aimed to draw attention on the harmful effects of the small-scale mining,
also known as galamsey on local communities and the environment at large.
Advocates have expressed growing concerns about the devastation of agricultural lands, water bodies and vegitations due to unrestricted mining operations.
The bail grants come at a pivotal moment public outcry increasingly demand action against galamsey.
During the court proceedings, the defense team highlighted the protests were peaceful and aimed at advocating for environmental protection rather than causing harm.
They emphasised the importance of freedom of expression and right to peaceful assembly in advancing social justice.
The judge recognised the significance of the protesters’ action while also emphasising the need to main law and order during public demonstration.
The Demonstrator’s case was taken to court by Attorney General and Minister of Justice after police reportedly held some individuals for more the allowed forty-eight hours before bringing them tp court.
Legal experts condemned the government’s detention of the protesters demonstrating against illegal mining which has become a serious threat to water bodies and forest reserves.
