Female CEOs summit: Bawumia hints female running mate?
At the recent Female CEOs Summit in Accra, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emphasized the critical role of women in Ghana’s ongoing digital transformation.
His remarks, suggesting the potential of appointing a female running mate, have fueled speculation amidst the backdrop of upcoming electoral decisions.
Dr. Bawumia addressed a gathering of Ghana’s top female business leaders, as reported by MyNewsGh.com, underscoring the vital contributions of women to national progress.
“Women CEOs are not only driving innovation, but also reshaping the very fabric of business in Ghana and beyond. As we stand at the precipice of a digital renaissance, it is imperative that we harness the collective power and ingenuity of female leaders to propel our nation forward,” he stated.
This statement comes at a crucial time as the ruling party, NPP, faces growing pressure to announce a vice-presidential candidate. Speculation is rife with at least three prominent women considered as potential running mates.
These include the Administrator of the District Assemblies Common Fund, Irene Naa Torshie Addo-Lartey; the Chief of Staff, Fremah Osei-Opare; and the Minister of Communication, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.
Should Dr. Bawumia opt for a female vice-presidential candidate, he would be mirroring the move of opposition leader John Mahama, who selected retired Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang as his running mate in the previous election cycle.
This decision could signify a progressive shift towards more inclusive governance and recognition of women’s leadership in Ghana.
Other potential candidates for the NPP’s vice-presidential slot include the Minister for Energy, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and Opoku Onyinah, the former Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, both of whom bring their distinct appeal to the party’s base.
As the political landscape in Ghana heats up, the choice of running mate will undoubtedly be a pivotal moment in shaping the future of the nation’s leadership.
