E/R: Dengue fever suspected cases hit 229 as 44 others and a health worker infected
The number of confirmed dengue fever cases in the Eastern Region has reached 45 as of July 17, 2024 with the majority of cases reported in five districts: Birim Central, Achiase, Akyemansa, Birim South, and Birim North.
The affected areas are experiencing a surge in cases, with a total of 10 districts reporting suspected cases.
The outbreak has been confirmed by health authorities, who have recorded 34 new positive cases on July 17, 2024, bringing the cumulative total to 229 suspected cases.
One health worker has also been infected, accounting for 2.2% of the total confirmed cases.
The Eastern Regional Public Health Emergency Operations Center (PHEOC) has been actively coordinating with affected districts to respond to the outbreak.
A joint outbreak investigation by national, regional, and district Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) is underway, with District Public Health Emergency Management Committees (PHEMCs) activated to manage the response.
In addition to the five districts with confirmed cases, nine other districts have reported suspected cases: New Juaben South, Lower Manya Krobo, Fanteakwa North, Abuakwa North, Kwaebibirem, and others.

Health authorities are working closely with local authorities to contain the spread of the disease and provide necessary care to those affected.
The case definition and surveillance guidelines for dengue fever are clear: suspected cases are individuals with acute febrile illness lasting 2-7 days with at least two of the following symptoms: headache, retro-orbital pain, myalgia, arthralgia, rash, hemorrhagic manifestations, or leucopenia.
Additionally, individuals confirmed for malaria who have completed a three-day course of antimalarials and are still unwell are also considered suspected cases.
Laboratory results have been received for 138 out of 229 cumulative suspected cases. Of these, 45 are positive for dengue fever, while 93 are negative and 91 results are still pending.
Health authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely to prevent further spread of the disease and provide necessary care to those affected.
In light of the ongoing outbreak, health workers are urged to maintain vigilance and report any suspected cases promptly.
The public is also advised to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites and reduce the risk of transmission.
