Youssou N’Dour, a Senegalese singer who was named to Time Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2007, is widely regarded as the most famous African artist alive.
Youssou N’Dour began singing as a young child performer at neighborhood gatherings in Dakar’s difficult Medina neighborhood, Senegal, West Africa. In 1959, he was born in Dakar.
He made his formal stage debut at the age of 12. By his mid-teens, he was frequently singing with the Star Band, Senegal’s most popular group at the time.
He was born to a Toucouleur father and a Serer mother. Their names were Elimane N’Dour and Ndeye Sokhna Mboup.
Youssou Ndour’s lone sibling, Bouba Ndour, is also a well-known performer in Senegal.
