Borno; At least 18 killed in suspected suicide attacks in Nigeria
Nigeria has been rocked by a series of deadly blast , thought to have been carried out by female suicide bombers, leaving at least 18 people killed and 30 injured in Borno.
The coordinated attacks targeted a wedding ceremony, a funeral procession, and a hospital in the northeastern state of Borno.
The bombing at the wedding ceremony alone killed six people and injured several others in the town of Gwoza.
The state’s emergency management agency confirmed that the attacks were carried out by female suicide bombers, with no one yet claiming responsibility for the attacks.
Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has condemned the attacks, calling them “desperate acts of terror” and vowing stern action against those responsible.
He stated that the incident had not undermined recent gains made against jihadist groups and that his government would not allow the nation to slide into an era of fear, tears, and blood.

“The president declares that the purveyors of wanton violence shall have a certain encounter with justice, and that these cowardly attacks are only but an isolated episode as his government will not allow the nation to slither into an era of fear, tears, sorrow, and blood,” said President Tinubu in a statement shared by his media aide on Facebook.
Borno state has been at the center of a 15-year insurgency by Boko Haram Islamist militants, which has displaced more than two million people and killed over 40,000. The group gained international notoriety in 2014 when it kidnapped more than 270 schoolgirls from the town of Chibok.
The attacks on Saturday are the latest in a series of bombings in Borno state over the past four months. In November, 20 people were killed by Boko Haram insurgents while returning from a funeral service in neighboring Yobe state. A day earlier, militants killed 17 people in a raid on Gurokayeya village after villagers refused to pay a so-called harvest tax.
Amnesty International Nigeria has called for an end to assaults on civilians in Borno, describing the attacks as “deplorable” and demonstrating a complete disregard for human life.
“These deplorable attacks that took place at a time people were mourning demonstrate complete disregard for human life,” said Amnesty International Nigeria in a statement.
Gwoza was seized by Boko Haram in 2014, and taken back by Nigerian forces in 2015 – but the group has since continued to carry out attacks and kidnappings near the town.
As the country mourns the loss of lives and those injured in these brutal attacks, it is imperative that the government takes concrete steps to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice and that measures are put in place to prevent such incidents from happening again.
