Bobrisky sentenced to 6 months in Prison for Naira abuse
In a significant legal development, popular Nigerian crossdresser Bobrisky, born Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, has been sentenced to six months in prison without the option of a fine for abusing the Nigerian currency, the Naira.
This ruling was handed down by a Federal High Court in Lagos, marking a strict enforcement of the country’s laws against tampering with national currency.
The court’s decision comes in response to an incident on March 24, 2024, where Bobrisky was filmed spraying cash during the premiere of the movie “Beasts of Two Worlds” by Eniola Ajao.
This act, which violated sections of Nigerian law that prohibit the mishandling of the Naira, prompted immediate legal action.
Following his arrest, investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) revealed that this was not an isolated incident but part of a pattern of similar offenses throughout 2023.
Justice Abimbola Awogboro, presiding over the case, emphasized that the harsh penalty serves as a deterrent to prevent others from disrespecting the national currency.
During the proceedings, Bobrisky declared his gender as male when questioned by the judge, despite his public persona as a female. Consequently, he is to serve his sentence in a men’s prison, starting from the date of his arrest.

The case has sparked discussions regarding the cultural practices of money spraying at events and its legal implications.
Moreover, Bobrisky’s situation highlights the broader issues of gender identity within the legal system, as his identification and treatment in custody reflect ongoing challenges faced by transgender and non-binary individuals in Nigeria.
Bobrisky’s sentencing not only underscores the seriousness with which financial offenses are treated in Nigeria but also serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of flaunting wealth in a manner that breaches legal standards.
This event is likely to resonate far beyond the realms of celebrity scandals, influencing both public behavior and the enforcement of currency-related laws in Nigeria.
