AMA begins major cleanup to clear Accra’s busy streets

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in partnership with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, has launched a large-scale decongestion operation to remove street traders and unauthorised structures from key parts of the city. The exercise officially began on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
The first phase targets busy areas around the AMA Head Office. These include Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square through to Adabraka. Other zones like Wato Junction, King Tackie Tawiah School, and Cow Lane will also be covered.
Speaking to the media on Monday, May 19, AMA’s Public Relations Officer, Gilbert Ankrah, explained the operation’s reach and purpose.
“The plan is straightforward, with the main focus on the areas surrounding the AMA Head Office. All zones within that enclave will be addressed. Attention will also be given to the Accra City Hotel and Mövenpick Hotel areas,” he said.
To prepare for the exercise, AMA Chief Executive Michael Kpakpo Allotey met with street hawkers in the Central Business District (CBD) to explain the initiative and ask for their support.
“I am pleading with you to assist us in cleaning up the city and restoring order. We all want a better and more organised environment, and cooperation is vital in achieving that goal,” he urged.
He also linked the decongestion drive to the government’s upcoming 24-hour economy plan, which will open new business opportunities in the near future.
“Our upcoming 24-hour economy policy will create new opportunities for you to sell your goods overnight. But for now, I plead that we stay off the pavement as we carry out this important cleanup,” he added.
Early Tuesday morning, AMA task forces, backed by the Ghana Police Service, moved in to remove unauthorised kiosks, stalls, and traders who had taken over roads and walkways. Officials said the action was necessary to enforce city bylaws, ease traffic, and make room for pedestrians and vehicles.
This clean-up is part of a broader campaign to bring order and better sanitation to Accra’s streets.
