Meta’s Twitter competitor Threads reaches 100 million sign-ups in 5 days, Mark Zuckerberg reacts

Meta launched its text-based conversation platform, Threads, on July 6 and the announcement spread like wildfire. Users began downloading the app out of sheer curiosity and within hours of its launch, the app already had users talking about their experience so far. It was earlier reported that Threads had crossed millions of downloads within 24 hours of launch. And now, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that the app has surpassed a whopping 100 million sign-ups in 5 days without promotions.

Taking to Threads, Zuckerberg wrote, “Threads reached 100 million sign ups over the weekend. That’s mostly organic demand and we haven’t even turned on many promotions yet. Can’t believe it’s only been 5 days.”

A user responded to Zuckerberg’s post and wrote, “It’s simple, you created a platform that doesn’t push alt-right nonsense, hate speech and disinformation on important issues such as climate change – please continue this direction because the people are loving it.”

Instagram CEO on Threads replacing Twitter

Threads launched at a time when Twitter had introduced some major changes like limiting the number of tweets people could view each day, restricting those without an account to view tweets, and so on. These changes had left many users miffed and people began looking for alternatives. Even Jack Dorsey-backed Bluesky saw a sudden surge in users.

However, as far as Threads is concerned, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri says that the new platform isn’t a replacement for Twitter.

According to a recent IANS report, Mosseri clarified that Meta has no intentions of replacing Twitter with Threads. Instead, the Mark Zuckerberg-led company’s focus is on creating a ‘public square for communities on Instagram that never really embraced Twitter and for communities on Elon Musk-run platform that are interested in a less angry place for conversations, but not all of Twitter’. In other words, Meta is focusing on creating a less-aggressive platform for users who never really embraced Elon Musk’s Twitter in the first place.

In addition to this, Threads will not just be focusing on world events and breaking news.

“Politics and hard news are inevitably going to show up on Threads — they have on Instagram as well to some extent — but we’re not going to do anything to encourage those verticals,” the Instagram CEO wrote on Threads.

How to sign-up for Threads

You can sign-up for Threads via your Instagram account credentials. The moment you download the app on your phone, you will see the option of ‘Login with Instagram’.

Once you click the option, you can enter your Instagram credentials to start the sign-up process. However, if you are already logged in to your Instagram account from your phone, the sign-up process will require just a single tap. It is up to you if you want to keep your Instagram username or change it for Threads.

After signing-up via Instagram, you will be taken to your profile. Look out for the ‘Import from Instagram’ tab on the page and your Instagram bio will be imported on Threads. However, you can also customise your Threads bio and write it differently, if you wish to.
