8 Life Lessons from a Turbulent Flight: My Journey from Accra to Sunyani
Last Monday I travelled by air (Passion Air) from Accra to Sunyani on a work related assignment. The flight was generally smooth until we were about to land in Sunyani. On two occasions, the pilot attempted landing but took off again into the air.
After suspending in the air for about 15mins, the pilot announced that owing to a storm which was approaching, the flight will go and land in Kumasi until they get the signal that it was safe to fly back to Sunyani. So we landed in Kumasi and stayed there for about 1hour 30 mins before flying back to Sunyani and this time round we were able to land safely.
During the time of the turbulence, I noticed how quiet everyone had become, the apparent worry on the faces of many. Some were even asleep and did not really notice what happened until we went to land in Kumasi and disembarked from the plane.
Later in Sunyani that evening, three of us who were on the flight met at the restaurant of the hotel we were lodging in and laughed about the whole incident with each of us sharing how we felt and what was going through our mind at the time. B
8 Life Lessons from a Turbulent Flight: My Journey from Accra to Sunyani
There are a few lessons I want to share as they relate to life when I thought about the whole incident later
1. We were going to Sunyani but due to circumstances beyond control we landed at Kumasi albeit temporarily. That is life, sometimes you may not get to where you are going at the exact time you want. Accept that there can be uncertainties on the journey of life.
2. It was the best thing to do under the circumstances to land in Kumasi because it was the safest thing to do. Sometimes in life, you have to make a detour for safety reasons and other considerations in order to really achieve what you want to achieve.
3. It cost a lot for the flight to go to Kumasi and later go back to Sunyani but that was the wisest thing to do. Sometimes you have to incur more cost to get it right. Imagine if the pilot had wanted to land at all costs in Sunyani during the turbulence and the inevitable happened. The cost would have been more.
4. The pilot attempted to land twice but could not succeed. Sometimes in life, you may have to attempt certain things more than two or three times before you succeed.
5. With all our human intellect, we cannot know or predict everything that will happen the next moment. Thus, we must know that there is a higher power greater than the human intellect that sometimes dictates human activity.
6. Calmness indeed is the cradle of power. I could imagine that in all this, the pilot was very calm because that was important to bring the situation under control. I was so calm during the time because I have learnt since the year 2005 that no matter what may be happening, it is only when you are calm that you can think right and marshall the energy to deal with every situation you find yourself in.
7. I also believe strongly that the Supernatural acts in the affairs of men. Obviously, during the turbulence, people started praying.
8. After every storm will come a moment for a smile or laughter. That was exactly what happened later in the evening when we found ourselves laughing at the situation that we were confronted with earlier in the day.
Reflecting on this journey, it becomes evident that life, much like our flight, is filled with unexpected twists and turns. The turbulence we face can teach us invaluable lessons about patience, safety, cost, persistence, humility, calmness, faith, and the promise of brighter moments ahead. Embracing these lessons can help us navigate our own life’s journey with greater wisdom and resilience, reminding us that after every storm, there is always a moment for a smile or laughter.
I hope you have learned from this “8 Life Lessons from a Turbulent Flight: My Journey from Accra to Sunyani” post.
