74-Year-Old Ohio Woman Charged With Bank Robbery Was Victim Of A Scam, Family Reveals
74-year-old Ohio woman charged with bank robbery was victim of a scam, family says.
According to police, a 74-year-old Ohio woman who fell victim to an online scam attempted to resolve her financial problems by robbing a credit union.
After being accused of robbing an AurGroup Credit Union by the Fairfield Township Police Department, Ann Mayers was taken into custody at her Hamilton, Ohio, residence. Workers at the credit union reported to police that on April 19, a woman entered the bank and “demanded money while displaying a handgun,” according to a Facebook post from the police department.
According to the post, police discovered the 2014 silver Hyundai Elantra that Mayers was allegedly driving during the robbery while they were at her house. When police got to the house, Mayers confessed to the robbery, so they took her into custody, according to the department.
A firearm was discovered in Mayers’ car by Fairfield Township police detectives, according to the Facebook post.
According to the police, Mayers had no criminal history prior to the alleged robbery. According to the department, she is accused of two felonies: tampering with evidence and aggravated robbery with a firearm.
Court records from Butler County do not indicate whether Mayers had legal representation for her criminal case.
After speaking with Mayers’ family, who informed them she was sending money to a “unidentified individual,” detectives discovered Mayers might have been a victim of a scam, Sgt. Brandon McCroskey wrote in an email to USA TODAY.
In that regard, she might be perceived by some as a ‘victim.’ Regretfully, Ann’s solution to her predicament was to use a gun to rob the bank, harming multiple other victims in the process,” McCroskey stated.

McCroskey described Mayers’ circumstances as “very sad and unfortunate,” if they are real. Regardless, the sergeant stated that Mayer “took the time to plan this robbery as evidence shows she removed her licence plate from her car and tried to remove a bumper sticker.”
“She also reportedly spoke to family members about robbing banks in the days leading up to the robbery, but the family did not take her comments seriously,” said McCroskey.
According to prisoner records, Mayers is presently being held at the Butler County Jail. According to police, she will stay in the jail until her initial court appearance.
