408 COVID-19 cases – useful, urgent, unique insights into Ghana’s figures
408 COVID-19 cases have been recorded by Ghana and counting after President Nana Addo’ 6th address to the nation which showed the week was going to determine the future decisions of the government on restrictions and policies put in place to contain community spread.

The introduction of enhanced surveillance and other measures have resulted in a sudden increase in case detection, with a high number of cases being reported.
As of 10 April 2020, 23:00 HRS, 27,346 persons have been tested with 408 positive cases recorded which represent 1.49 % of tests compared to total cases.

Out of the 408 COVID-19 cases, 394 positive cases representing 96.56% are mild cases of COVID-19 while eight (8) have died from the disease.
From the onset, data has shown that most of the cases in Ghana were imported. 205 cases (50.25%) were reported from the routine surveillance. 21.56% of cases which is 88 in number terms are from enhanced surveillance activities whiles 115 from travelers under mandatory quarantine make up (28.19%) of the total cases.
Greater Accra remains a hotspot followed by Ashanti, Eastern, Northern, Central, North East, Upper East, and Upper West regions.
Data available on the Ghana Health Service portal shows more males are infected than females, and persons with no travel history who have been infected are more than those with travel history.
This is a sign that persons in residential and densely populated areas in Accra are at high risk.
These are the areas where the government has introduced enhanced surveillance to help be ahead of the virus.
Other unique insights into Ghana’s figures indicate that governments combat strategies are yielding the needed result, however, the continuous increase in numbers may call for one to two additional weeks of lockdown and these restrictive orders may be extended to other regions.
For now, it will be prudent to lockdown the Northern and Eastern Region in addition to Accra, Kumasi to avoid a disaster or lockdown regions that have cases irrespective of the numbers to help deal with the threat COVID-19 poses to Ghana as a whole.
