We Will Bomb Any Country That Arrests Putin over ICC Warrant
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has warned that any country that arrests President Vladimir Putin would face bombings from the Russian state.
Medvedev’s comments are related to an International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrant against Putin over the abduction of Ukrainian children.
Yahoo News reported that Medvedev said that any attempts to arrest Putin would be considered a “declaration of war” by Russia. Putin is the third sitting president to be hit by an ICC warrant after former leaders of Sudan and Libya, Omar al-Bashir and Muammar Gaddafi, respectively.
According to the warrant, Putin could face arrest in over 100 countries that recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction.
Russia, like the United States, is not a party to the ICC under the Rome Statute, which established the court. Putin is scheduled to attend a five-nation economic summit in South Africa later this year, and the South African government has stated that it will seek clarifications before Putin arrives in the country.
The arrest warrant issued by the ICC relates to the abduction of Ukrainian children during the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
The children were taken to Russia and later returned to Ukraine after the Ukrainian government put pressure on the Russian authorities. The ICC has stated that there is evidence that the abductions were part of a systematic campaign to remove children from Ukraine.
Medvedev’s warning of bombings in response to an arrest of Putin is a serious threat, and it highlights the tensions between Russia and the international community.
The situation is complex, as Putin is not recognized as a legitimate president by some countries, including Ukraine. The ICC’s arrest warrant against Putin is a significant development and adds to the international pressure on Russia to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
