VIDEO: Passengers flee burning plane that skidded off runway in Senegal
A dramatic incident unfolded at Dakar’s Blaise Diagne International Airport when an Air Senegal flight, a Boeing 737-300, veered off the runway during takeoff and caught fire early Thursday morning, causing passengers to flee.
The plane was destined for Bamako, the capital of Mali, with 78 passengers onboard.
At least ten individuals sustained injuries in the chaos, including four who were seriously hurt. The pilot, among those injured, suffered minor injuries. Despite the severity of the accident, most passengers escaped unscathed.
Authorities quickly responded to the emergency, and footage circulating on social media, later confirmed by the BBC, captured passengers evacuating the flaming aircraft in a desperate bid to reach safety.
The video shows a frenzied scene as people hurried away from the burning fuselage, underscored by the night’s darkness and the urgent flashing of emergency lights.

The exact cause of the accident is under investigation, but initial reports suggest that the aircraft might have experienced a malfunction during the critical takeoff phase, leading to the runway excursion.
Causes of Flight Accidents:
Flight accidents can be caused by a variety of factors, often involving complex interactions between human elements, mechanical failures, and environmental conditions. Here are some common causes:
1. Pilot Error: The most frequent cause of aviation accidents is human error. Pilots may make mistakes due to fatigue, inadequate training, or errors in judgment.
2. Mechanical Failure: Aircraft are complex machines that require constant maintenance and monitoring. Mechanical failures can occur due to design flaws, maintenance errors, or the unexpected failure of a component.
3. Weather Conditions: Severe weather, such as storms, high winds, and lightning, can severely impact flight operations, sometimes leading to accidents.
4. Air Traffic Control Errors: Miscommunications or operational mistakes by air traffic control can lead to close calls or actual collisions.
5. Bird Strikes: Birds colliding with aircraft, especially during takeoff or landing, can damage engines and other critical systems, potentially leading to accidents.
Each of these factors alone can be critical, but in many cases, accidents result from a combination of issues, underscoring the complexity and challenges of air travel safety.
