Update on Base Pay negotiations 2023; meeting adjourned to 11th January, 2023
The agenda item, Continuation of Base Pay Negotiations, was discussed at the Ministry of Health on January 10, 2023. (Conference Room).
The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) invited representatives from the Government Team, Labor Unions/Associations, and Security Services to a scheduled meeting to negotiate Base Pay for the eighth (8th) time.
Previously, the Base Pay was negotiated to the point where the government moved up to 18% and organized labor negotiated 58%.
The Government team pushed upwards with their negotiations on the 10th of January, 2023, where they made a 2% increment meaning, at the meeting, they agreed on 20% Base Pay.
However, Organized Labour presented a new request of 50% with the justification of assisting in the best possible negotiations.
Because of the low percentage of negotiations, the meeting has been postponed to January 11th, 2023 for another negotiation, with high hopes for the best.
From the perspective of the Labour Minister, it is clear that they are dissatisfied with the government’s moves on the issue of Base Pay since the beginning of their negotiations until now.
From 2011 to 2019, the government increased base pay with a lower margin.
Base pay was increased to 20% in 2011, 18% in 2012, 10% in 2013, 10% in 2015, 13% in 2016, 10% in 2017, 12.5% in 2018, and 10% in 2019.
Based on how the government has handled the increment of Base Pay when invited for discussion, it will take a long time to reach an agreement on the best and most acceptable Base Pay in terms of how Organized Labor is charged with their negotiations.
