UNU-INRA hosts an outreach event on the IPCC 1.5 Report

Accra, July 2019: Renowned climate scientists and communicators from the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) and other leading institutes will, from 25th to 26th July, gather at the University of Ghana for an outreach event on the IPCC 1.5 Report, arguably the most important climate report in history.

Gathering scientists, communicators and various stakeholder groups across the country, and from other nations in West Africa, the event will examine the IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5ºC, with a view to foster understanding of the scientific language often used to describe climate change, promote accessibility and understanding of the 1.5 Report among targeted stakeholders as a way of fostering ownership and responsibility for recommendations.

Speaking on rationale for the event, Dr Fatima Denton, Director of UNU-INRA said: “We believe that enhancing access to scientific information is critical to promote agency and positive action, this is even more urgent where climate change is concerned.”

To this end, the outreach event, to be led by seasoned scientists and experienced communicators, will feature presentations and conversations conveyed in language that is suitable to the needs of targeted stakeholder groups, including parliamentarians, journalists, students and representatives from the business community.

Organized by the United Nations Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the African Academy of Science (AAS), in collaboration with the University of Ghana, the event will be held at the Law School (University of Ghana) on 25thJuly and Noguchi Memorial Institute Conference Room (University of Ghana) on 26th July, and is open to the public.
