According to President Lazarus Chakwera, the commander of the Malawi Defence Force informed him that the plane was found in a destroyed state, indicating the severity of the crash.
The Vice-President was on his way to represent the government at the burial of former government minister Ralph Kasambara, who died four days ago. Former First Lady Shanil Dzimbiri was also on board.
The plane took off from the capital, Lilongwe, and was meant to land at the airport in Mzuzu, but was forced to turn back due to poor visibility.
This decision ultimately led to the tragic outcome.
Profile Of Dr. Chilima,
Vice-President Chilima has been a prominent figure in Malawian politics since 2014, serving as vice-president under President Peter Mutharika.
He was widely loved by the Malawian people, particularly among the youth.
However, in 2022, he was arrested and charged with accepting money in exchange for awarding government contracts.
Last month, the court dropped the charges without giving any reasons for the decision.
Chilima is married with two children and leaves behind a legacy of public service and dedication to his country.
As Malawi mourns this tragic loss, President Chakwera has expressed his deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Vice-President Chilima and those who were on board.
The nation is in shock and is struggling to come to terms with this devastating news.
The search and rescue operation was carried out by soldiers who were searching Chikangawa Forest in an effort to find the plane.
The plane’s wreckage was found in a remote area of the forest, making it a challenging and difficult task.
As we reflect on this tragedy, we remember Vice-President Chilima’s contributions to Malawi’s political landscape and his commitment to serving his country.
