In 2022, Ghana grappled with significant health challenges as reflected in the statistical data released by the Births and Deaths Registry.
The registry documented a total of 50,992 registered deaths, of which 18,689, accounting for 36.7%, were attributed to the top 11 deadliest diseases in the country.
These figures underline the critical health issues affecting the Ghanaian population and underscore the importance of addressing these medical concerns promptly.
Leading the grim tally was hypertension, which claimed 2,573 lives. This was closely followed by pneumonia, with 2,457 deaths, and heart failure, which resulted in 2,225 deaths.
Acute respiratory failure also featured prominently, leading to 2,203 deaths.
Other major causes included stroke (1,679), diabetes (1,578), severe sepsis (1,558), septic shock (1,401), chronic liver disease (1,103), cancer (1,036), and cerebrovascular diseases (876).
Each of these conditions contributed significantly to the overall mortality rate, highlighting a range of both infectious and non-communicable diseases impacting Ghanaians.
A particularly concerning aspect noted in the report was the higher susceptibility of men to most of these diseases, with the notable exception of cancer, which predominantly affected women.
The data revealed that conditions such as hypertension, pneumonia, and heart failure were more likely to result in death among males.
This trend suggests potential underlying factors such as lifestyle, occupational hazards, or even genetic predispositions that may contribute to higher mortality rates among men in Ghana.

Among the elderly population, pneumonia, severe sepsis, cerebrovascular diseases, heart failure, and cancer were the most common causes of death.
These conditions accounted for death percentages ranging from 49.0% to 59.0%, indicating a significant impact on older adults who often suffer from multiple health conditions making them more vulnerable to severe outcomes.
In contrast, chronic liver disease, septic shock, and diabetes were more prevalent among the adult population, with chronic liver disease alone accounting for as much as 72.0% of deaths in this group.
Stroke was another significant cause of death that affected both adults and the elderly, pointing to widespread issues related to vascular health and access to timely medical intervention.
The alarming statistics from the Births and Deaths Registry call for an urgent response from both governmental and non-governmental health organizations.
These entities must focus on targeted public health interventions aimed at prevention, early detection, and effective management of these diseases.
Enhancing healthcare infrastructure, increasing awareness about preventive measures, and improving access to quality medical care are crucial steps in reducing the mortality rates associated with these prevalent diseases.
Moreover, these findings should inform policy decisions and healthcare planning to ensure that adequate resources are allocated to the most affected regions and demographics.
By addressing the root causes and facilitating better healthcare delivery, Ghana can hope to see a decrease in these disturbing mortality rates in the future.
