Thailand’s Senate has passed a marriage equality bill, paving the way for the country to become the first in Southeast Asia to recognize same sex marriage. The historic vote, which took place on June 18, 2024, was met with jubilation and cheers from LGBTQ advocates and supporters.
The bill, which was approved by 130 votes in favor of same-sex marriage, will now be sent to King Maha Vajiralongkorn for assent. If accepted, it will come into force 120 days after its publication in the royal gazette.
The legislation grants same-sex couples equal inheritance and adoption rights, and replaces gendered terms such as “men”, “women”, “husbands”, and “wives” with gender-neutral language. Politicians and activists alike were seen celebrating in the National Assembly, waving rainbow flags and expressing solidarity with the LGBTQ community.

This momentous decision is as a result of years of advocacy and campaigning by LGBTQ organizations and individuals.
In 2020, the Thai court recommended that the law on marriage be expanded to accommodate minority rights, and Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has been a vocal supporter of the LGBTQ community.
“This is a monumental step forward,” said Plaiah Kyoka Shodladd, a member of the parliamentary committee on same-sex marriage. “We are very proud to make history… Today, love triumphed over prejudice after fighting for more than 20 years. Today, we can say that this country has marriage equality.”
Thailand has long been known for its tolerant and accepting attitude towards the LGBTQ community, making this move a natural progression in the country’s commitment to protecting minority rights. The passage of this bill sends a powerful message to the world about the importance of equality and inclusivity.
As news of this historic decision spreads, it is likely to inspire similar movements in other countries around the world. Thailand’s bold move is a testament to the power of perseverance and advocacy, and serves as a beacon of hope for marginalized communities everywhere.
Thailand’s Senate has taken a significant step forward in recognizing the rights of all citizens, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
