Rehabilitation works on Nungua Interchange project
The Department of Urban Roads (DUR) has begun rehabilitation works on the roads around the stalled Nungua Interchange project in Accra to ease traffic and improve access for motorists and commuters.
This three-kilometre project involves asphalting the untarred portions of the road from the Nungua Barrier in the Krowor Municipality to the Sakumono Estate Junction in the Tema West Municipality.
Additionally, the project includes rehabilitating 19 kilometres of inner roads within the Nungua area. The work is expected to be completed within two months.
During a site visit to Nungua, the Minister of Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso-Boakye, stated that he had directed the DUR to engage local contractors to repair the deteriorated sections of the road.
This decision aims to alleviate the daily challenges faced by motorists on the damaged roads.
“We are aware that this project is causing inconveniences to motorists, commuters, and residents. This area is a strategic location due to its population density and business activities, which is why the government is implementing such a significant intervention,” he explained.

Regarding the delays, Asenso-Boakye noted that the project was initially scheduled for completion in February last year but encountered setbacks due to the ongoing debt restructuring programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
“The project had reached an 85 percent completion rate when the contractor left the site. Since then, the road has experienced significant deterioration,” he said.
The minister further explained that the three-tier interchange project is part of a larger 31-kilometre road works initiative divided into two lots: the first being the 14-kilometre stretch from Osu to Boade Junction and the second being the 17-kilometre stretch from Boade Junction to Tema Community Three.
Asenso-Boakye emphasized the government’s commitment to completing all delayed projects, including the Takoradi interchange and the Ashaiman and Tema-Aflao roads, to provide relief to residents in these areas.
He urged residents to remain patient as the government works towards reaching an agreement with the IMF and the Paris Club, which would allow construction work to resume.
The rehabilitation of the Nungua Interchange and surrounding roads is a critical infrastructure project aimed at improving traffic flow and accessibility in a densely populated and economically significant area.
Once completed, the project is expected to significantly reduce travel times and enhance the overall driving experience for commuters, thereby contributing to the region’s economic development.
The government’s proactive steps in addressing the road’s deterioration reflect its commitment to infrastructure development and its recognition of the project’s importance to the local community.
