PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO and ASANTEHENE cut sod for PHASE II of Kumasi central market redevelopment project
The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, today cut a historic sod to set in motion the phase two of the redevelopment project aimed at giving the Kumasi Central Market a facelift.
At the colourful groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, 2nd May 2019, at Kejetia, the president of Ghana President revealed that the second phase of the redevelopment project will start after the sod cutting.
BPorjects by the Nana Addo led government in Asanteman, and, across the country demonstrates continue to show the commitment of the government towards delivering important and strategic infrastructure projects to create jobs and improve on the economic fortunes of Ghana.
The president speaking at the function said.
The redevelopment of the Kumasi Central Market is a two hundred and forty-eight-million-euro (€248 million) project, and it is being financed by Deutsche Bank of Germany, with export credit guarantee from the United Kingdom Export Finance (UKEF). The construction will be undertaken by Messrs Contracta Construction Ltd, UK, and will be finished within 48 months
When completed, the will have up to six thousand, five hundred (6,500) spaces to be leased out. It will also have five thousand, four hundred (5,400)stores; (800) eight hundred kiosks. Other include fifty (50) spaces cut out purposely for restaurants, some two hundred and ten (210) shop areas for fishmongers as well as butcher stores.
The business hub will also have (40) livestock stores and (1,800m2) space of community facilities. The facility will also have a waste treatment plant, fire station for the Ghana Fire Service, a Police station within the facility, post office, and an amphi-theatre.
The president of Ghana is convinced that the Kumasi Central Market, when completed after this phase, will address causes of fire outbreak in the market. The project is expected to create more than nine hundred (900) and over 2500 indirect jobs. The facility will create a safe market environment for traders, easily curting of goods in and out for the market and also make it easy for customers to access the market.

“I appeal to all of you, city authorities, traders, customers and residents, to support and co-operate with the contractor, Messrs Contracta Construction Ltd, so as to complete this project on time. I know I can count on all of you in this regard,” the President added.
Present at the sod cutting ceremony was the Asantehen who has an important program dubbed “World-Meets-in-Ghana Investors Forum and Executive Dinner Ball”
which commences on 3rd May and end on 4th May 2019. The president of the Republic of Ghana will be one of the special guests of honours at the two-day event
