Akufo-Addo, Asantehene commission Prempeh I International Airport, Kumasi
In a significant ceremony, Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, officially commissioned the Prempeh I International Airport, Kumasi, formerly known as the Kumasi International Airport.
The event, held on Friday, May 10, in Kumasi, was attended by traditional authorities, government officials, and prominent figures of the New Patriotic Party.
The President expressed his delight at the commissioning, highlighting his administration’s commitment to developing Ghana’s infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of its people and position the country as a beacon of progress and prosperity in Africa.

He emphasized that the renaming of the airport and its commissioning coinciding with the 25th-anniversary celebration of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s enstoolment is a fitting tribute to the rich cultural heritage and historical legacy of the Ashanti kingdom.
The President praised the transformation of the Kumasi Airport into Prempeh I International Airport, saying it embodies the spirit of renovation, excellence, and collaboration that defines the Ghanaian people.
“The transformation of Kumasi Airport into Prempeh I International Airport, Kumasi represents more than just bricks and mortar. It embodies the spirit of renovation, excellence and collaboration that defines the Ghanaian people.
“Through meticulous planning, hard work and dedication, we have turned the vision into reality and today we reap the fruits of our neighbour,” he said.
He noted that the decision to rename the airport after Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh I was unequivocal, as he played a pivotal role in consolidating the Ashanti kingdom during his reign.
The President recounted that Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh I faced significant challenges during his reign, including colonial encroachment and internal strife.
However, his leadership and vision were instrumental in shaping the destiny of the Ashanti people.
He urged the Ghana Airport Company Limited to ensure the preservation of the premises as a historic site.
The President expressed optimism that the airport will alleviate the travails of numerous travelers and businesses in the Ashanti region and beyond.
He emphasized that the airport will serve as an important gateway, forging stronger economic ties, supporting international trades and tourism, and promoting cultural exchanges.
The commissioning of Prempeh I International Airport marks a new chapter in Ghana’s journey towards progress and prosperity.
The President urged Ghanaians to work together to build a future that is bright, prosperous, and full of promise for generations to come.
