Police Seize Over GH₵1.4 Million Worth of Suspected Cannabis from Impounded Truck in Oti Region

The Oti Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has uncovered a large quantity of suspected cannabis with an estimated street value exceeding GH₵1.4 million from an impounded truck intercepted late last year.

According to a press release issued by the Regional Public Affairs Unit in Dambai on Tuesday, 25 February 2026, the illicit substances were retrieved from a Volvo truck with registration number GC 3522-09, which was intercepted at the Bonakye checkpoint while heading towards Kpassa.

Police disclosed that the truck was stopped on 29 December 2025 based on intelligence suggesting it was transporting illegal goods. Upon interception, the driver and one other occupant reportedly fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle with the ignition key still in place.

Following investigations and a court order issued by the Jasikan Circuit Court on 24 February 2026, the impounded truck was opened at Nkwanta for inspection. The exercise was conducted in the presence of representatives from multiple security and state agencies, including the Police, the Military, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), Defence Intelligence, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Narcotics Control Commission (Jasikan), as well as members of the media.

During the search, officers discovered 320 cartons of bottled mineral water concealing 91 bales of suspected cannabis. The bales were found to contain a total of 7,173 slabs of the substance. Police estimate the street value of the seized drugs to be in excess of GH₵1.4 million.

The exhibits have since been retained by the police as investigations continue to identify and apprehend the individuals behind the suspected drug trafficking operation.

The Police have reiterated their commitment to combating the trafficking and distribution of illegal drugs in the region and across the country. They have also appealed to the public to assist law enforcement agencies by volunteering credible information that will aid in crime prevention and detection.
