Opoku Prempeh tops NPP Running Mate Position for Bawumia-NIB Survey
Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Emerges as Frontrunner for NPP’s Running Mate Position according to NIB
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is gearing up for the 2024 general elections, and the choice of a running mate for their flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has become a hot topic of discussion. According to a recent survey conducted by the National Investigation Bureau (NIB), Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has emerged as the top contender for the role.
The survey engaged 5,116 NPP delegates nationwide, including national, regional, constituency, and polling station executives. The results show that Dr. Opoku Prempeh secured an impressive 76.2% of the responses, making him the clear favorite among party members.

Coming in second was Education Minister and MP for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who garnered 10.16% of the votes. Other notable personalities who made the cut include Apostle Opoku Onyinah, former Chairman of the Pentecost Church-Ghana, and Bryan Acheampong, Minister of Agriculture and MP for Abetifi Constituency.
The survey also revealed that there was a strong consensus among party members that the running mate should be selected from the Ashanti Region. A staggering 84% of respondents believed that Dr. Opoku Prempeh is the ideal running mate for Dr. Bawumia due to his charisma and popularity among party members.
However, NIB’s report also warns that Dr. Bawumia should exercise caution in selecting Dr. Prempeh as his running mate. With the ongoing power crises in Ghana, NIB notes that Dr. Prempeh’s role as Minister of Energy could impact his candidacy if not properly managed. Therefore, the government may need to take measures to solidify his competence in managing the energy sector to enhance the party’s prospects in the 2024 general elections.
As the NPP gears up for the elections, it remains to be seen whether Dr. Bawumia will heed NIB’s advice and choose an alternative running mate or stick with Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s popularity among party members.
One thing is certain, however – with just six months to go before the polls, the choice of running mate will play a crucial role in shaping the party’s fortunes in 2024.
